Set during the French Revolutionary Wars in a remote whaling-port on the north-east coast of England, the inhabitants of Monkshaven live in fear of the callous pressgang who snatch returning sailors before they can reach their friends and families. Sylvia Robson - the heroine of the musical - is a young girl in search of romance and loved by two very different men: the bold sailor Charley Kinraid and the cautious and conventional Philip Hepburn, who idolizes her. When Sylvia and Charley fall in love, Philip's jealousy leads to betrayal as he separates the couple forever.
The score of Kinraid is best described as theatrical folk music, influenced by modern folk artists such as Bellowhead, Eliza Carthy, Seth Lakeman and Kate Rusby.
